Husband:
William James Downie Born: 1831 Died: 9-Jan-1892 Father: Samuel Downie Mother: Elizabeth Johnston William came to Scotland, from the village of Dunloy, near Ballymena, Co. Antrim. William Downie stated his family went to N. Ireland from Linlithgow, Scotland. William came from Dunloy to live in Coatdyke, Airdrie Scotland, around 1845. This residence in Lanarkshire and the date is determined by his employment as a waggoner. He transported materials by horse and cart to build the first railway in Scotland, from Glasgow to the Coatbridge Iron Works and on through to Edinburgh. William Downie's wife's maiden name was Jessie Winning. They married in New Monklands in the parish of Shotts in December 1852. The cost of registration was 3/6d. What is certain is that he was in Scotland for the Census of 1851 and lodged at the home of his future bride, Jessie Winning, at Colliertree Brick Rows, Clarkston. All certificates show that he, his bride and her parents were Irish, though then living in Scotland. He and she were illiterate and witnessed their children's births with an X mark, and on one occasion (daughter Elizabeth's birth in 1869) registered under the name Downey, the registrar no doubt writing down what he heard. The Downey spelling is a totally different Southern Irish clan, and invariably Catholic! William and Jessie (Winning) Downie are interred in Wellwynd Churchyard, Airdrie.
