The first U3A started in Toulouse, France, in 1972 with the idea of giving older people access to learning facilities at established universities. The scheme spread rapidly throughout Europe. In 1981 U3A was introduced to Britain but in the form of a self-organised learning co-operative which enables its members to share educational, creative and learning activities. Today, U3A in the UK is supported by the Third Age Trust (a registered charity and limited company). There are over 750 U3A’s in the UK, with a total membership of over 240 000. Each U3A is organisationally independent and self-financing. Regards,
Elaine
We are still looking for a Secretary. As you will see from the last Newsletter, the job has been reduced in content. If you are at all interested and wish to know more, either telephone me for more details or to arrange to attend a Committee Meeting (the next one is 27 February). Remember, we cannot continue without one.
We have a full complement of Committee Members, apart from a secretary, as from the next AGM on March 11th as those retiring members wish to stand again for re-election. HOWEVER, we are always very glad to welcome new members onto the Committee and if you are interested you can come on as a Co-opted Member – just get in touch with any Committee Member to let us know, or even at the AGM. This is an easy way to get to know how the Committee works, and to see if you wish to become more involved, before becoming a formal Trustee.
